Twenty-six people were arrested at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium park on Wednesday because the city and police forcibly evicted those living in an encampment there, police say.
At the peak of the confrontation, officers might be seen rushing to push up against the metal barrier as they came face-to-face with demonstrators. a minimum of one person seemed to have jumped the fence and was seen being arrested by police.
Nearby, police might be seen razing a makeshift barrier of wooden pallets before several people were led away in handcuffs.
By 2 p.m., police had completely cleared the location having physically removed those that wouldn’t leave.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Toronto Police Staff Supt. Randy Carter said police were working to support the town which their aim throughout was to preserve public safety.
In a news release on Wednesday night, police said the arrests were made for such offences as assault with a weapon, obstructing police, assaulting a lawman , and trespassing.
