Two Russian flights were escorted out of Canada’s airspace on Monday after they breached a restriction on Russian aircraft, according to the air-traffic control service. The planes described themselves as “humanitarian” trips.
As part of the heavy penalties placed on Moscow in reaction to its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Canada began banning Russian planes from entering its airspace on Sunday.
However, on the same day, Aeroflot AFLT.MM flight AFL111 broke the prohibition by claiming to be a humanitarian flight. NAV CANADA, Canada’s air-traffic control organisation, does not have the ability to deny an aircraft declaring itself a humanitarian flight airspace access under normal conditions.
The other Russian airliner that tried to fly into Canadian territory took off from American airports.
NAV CANADA, in collaboration with Transport Canada, has issued an order to all air traffic control units to deny all recognisable Russian jets access to their airspace. The sole exemption to this rule is if Transport Canada has given its prior clearance.
In the event of a subsequent violation, NAV CANADA will guide the offending plane to the nearest airport and alert the regulator, which will be notified to Canada’s Air Defense Sector and the regulator immediately.
