Ottawa police and lawmakers want to end the trucker protest as soon as possible

Over the second weekend of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” protests in the nation’s capital, Ottawa police say they made many arrests and issued hundreds of fines.
The language and legal positions are also intensifying, with the police chief describing the continuous protest as a “siege” on the city, the mayor proclaiming a state of emergency, and the city filing an injunction in court.
Over the weekend, the original convoy’s ranks swelled with extra trucks and bodies, with authorities estimating hundreds of vehicles heading into Ottawa on Friday.
On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of counterprotesters gathered at Ottawa City Hall to oppose the ongoing downtown march.
Ottawa police Chief Peter Sloly told a special police board meeting convened Saturday afternoon that his department needed more resources and that the legislative guidelines in place for police conduct “were never intended to deal with a city under siege.”
