Pope Francis has apologised and requested forgiveness from a group of Indigenous delegates for the Catholic Church’s role in Canada’s residential school system.
After private discussions between Pope Francis and representatives from the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis this week, all parties met with the Pope on Friday in the Vatican.
The pontiff, speaking in Italian, begged God’s forgiveness for the “deplorable behaviour” of Catholic Church members, acknowledging the wrongs committed against Indigenous peoples in residential schools.
Francis said during his final meeting with the delegates, “I want to tell you with all my heart: I’m so sorry.”
