After Ontario government declines request of extension, TDSB removing mask mandate

After the province denied its plea for more time to remove COVID-19 provisions, the Toronto District School Board is pushing forward with lifting the masking mandate in its schools next week.
Last week, TDSB Chair Alexander Brown wrote to Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore, Minister of Education Stephen Lecce, and Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa, requesting that the scheduled lifting of masks in schools on March 21 be postponed indefinitely.
“Removing such procedures as masking, distancing, and daily screening precautions all at once would go against our many layer approach to protecting our school communities from COVID-19 spread,” Brown stated.
The TDSB claimed the province “reiterated its previous direction” in response to the board’s letter in a post on its website on Thursday.
Brown said that the TDSB will follow and implement the province’s adjustments, which include suspending COVID-19 safety precautions, such as masking, on March 21.
While the board had already informed parents of the changes prior to March Break, Brown said the board hoped for a different response from the province.

TDSB ਦੇ ਚੇਅਰ ਅਲੈਗਜ਼ੈਂਡਰ ਬ੍ਰਾਊਨ ਨੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਇੱਕੋ ਸਮੇਂ ‘ਤੇ ਮਾਸਕਿੰਗ, ਦੂਰੀ, ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਸਕ੍ਰੀਨਿੰਗ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਰਗੇ ਉਪਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਟਾਉਣਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਕੂਲੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਵਿਡ -19 ਦੇ ਫੈਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸਾਡੀ ਮਲਟੀਪਲ ਲੇਅਰ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।”
ਵੀਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੈੱਬਸਾਈਟ ‘ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਪੋਸਟ ਵਿੱਚ, TDSB ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸੂਬੇ ਨੇ ਬੋਰਡ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ “ਆਪਣੀ ਪਿਛਲੀ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਹਰਾਇਆ”।
ਬ੍ਰਾਊਨ ਨੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ TDSB 21 ਮਾਰਚ ਤੱਕ ਮਾਸਕਿੰਗ ਸਮੇਤ, ਕੋਵਿਡ-19 ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਉਪਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਕਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਪ੍ਰੋਵਿੰਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਐਲਾਨੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਤਬਦੀਲੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਬੋਰਡ ਨੇ ਮਾਰਚ ਬਰੇਕ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਦੀਲੀਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੂਚਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਬ੍ਰਾਊਨ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬੋਰਡ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਬੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਸੀ।
