The Toronto Library may launch a CO2 lending program in mid-July

As part of the of the city’s epidemic response, Toronto residents may soon be able to borrow a carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor from a public library.
In North America, the City of Peterborough became the first municipality in April, to facilitate such a program—lending out CO2 monitors to residents for a week at a time so they could determine the quality of air ventilation within their home, office, or other indoor spaces.
Officials said at the time that the devices used a “stoplight system”. Green light means good air quality in space, yellow means it is fine, and red means very little ventilation in the area.
The higher the CO2 level inside the space, the more recycled air a person will breathe.
CO2 monitors have been widely used during epidemics, although not frequently. In 2021, Quebec’s education minister says monitors will be installed in every classroom.
The use of CO2 monitoring has been widely used in scientific journals as a tool to measure the risk of COVID-19 infection.
In a tweet posted on July 2, the library said it plans to launch a CO2 monitor program in mid-July and expects more information.
