58 killed on Toronto roads this year, ‘failure’ for Vision Zero

A speeding driver killed a cherished couple on Parkside Drive, while a girl was struck by a driver at a crosswalk near her Scarborough high school.
Just last week, a crash sent an SUV flying into a downtown pavement, sending six people and a driver to the hospital. The city’s statistics do not yet reflect their injuries.
Four years after Toronto formally unveiled its road safety plan with the objective of zero traffic-related deaths and injuries, road safety activists continue to call on the city to do better.
The city highlights to projects that will be completed in 2021
This year, the city made some progress by making bike lanes permanent, issuing thousands of tickets via photo radar cameras, and implementing minor changes such as providing pedestrians advanced walk signals.
Among other initiatives, the transportation services division has cut speed restrictions on local roads in Etobicoke, North York, and Scarborough, constructed 350 school safety zones, and implemented left-turn speed bumps in eight intersections.
In a statement, the city defended its Vision Zero initiatives, claiming that it is a long-term plan with “sustainable results not always instantaneous.”

ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਬਾਈਕ ਲੇਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਥਾਈ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਫੋਟੋ ਰਾਡਾਰ ਕੈਮਰਿਆਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਟਿਕਟਾਂ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੈਦਲ ਚੱਲਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਡਵਾਂਸ ਵਾਕ ਸਿਗਨਲ ਦੇਣ ਵਰਗੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਬਦਲਾਅ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੁਝ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
