Forty-six migrants were killed Monday in a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas.
A fire official said 16 people, including four children, had also been taken to hospital.
San Antonio, 250 kilometers (150 miles) from the US-Mexico border, is a major transit route for human traffickers.
Human traffickers often use trucks to transport undocumented immigrants to the United States after they have managed to cross the border.
Officials said a city worker had discovered the scene after hearing cries for help.
The weather in San Antonio is extremely hot in the summer months, with temperatures reaching 39.4C (103F) on Mondays, and it is suspected that the victims died due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Three people have been detained and the investigation has been handed over to federal agents.
