Ontario Human Rights Commission seeks suggestions on names of disputed roads and buildings

The Ontario Human Rights Commission is developing a new policy on the use of abusive names, words and images, for which the commission has sought suggestions from the general public.
The commission says it wants to resolve the issue as soon as possible because of the demand for the removal of some historical statues by Indigenous peoples and people from other ethnic communities is also connected to it.
Due to these reasons, there has been a demand to change the names of some roads, buildings and institutions.
“What’s in a name?” Probably, everything, Chief Commissioner Patricia DeGuard said in a statement.
We have been hearing that the names of some roads, buildings and monuments etc. cause distress to the communities.
He said that the new policy statement was being prepared to create a better understanding of human rights and to find solutions to these issues by bringing the communities together in a respectful manner.
During the last summer season, some municipalities and educational institutions decided to review some roads, buildings and statues and even change some.

ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੁਝ ਸੜਕਾਂ, ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਬਦਲਣ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਉੱਠੀ ਹੈ।
“ਇੱਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਹੈ?” ਸ਼ਾਇਦ, ਸਭ ਕੁਝ, ਚੀਫ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰ ਪੈਟਰੀਸ਼ੀਆ ਡੀਗਾਰਡ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ।
ਅਸੀਂ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਕੁਝ ਸੜਕਾਂ, ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਰਕਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਨਵੀਂ ਨੀਤੀ ਬਿਆਨ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨਜਨਕ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਲ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਗਰਮੀ ਦੇ ਮੌਸਮ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਕੁਝ ਨਗਰ ਪਾਲਿਕਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਅਕ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਸੜਕਾਂ, ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਮੀਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
