Women will run this country! There are more women than men in parliament

Iceland has elected a parliament with a majority of women. The decision could be a milestone for gender equality in the North Atlantic Islands. Women won 33 seats in Iceland’s 63-member parliament after the count ended on Sunday.
In the coalition government led by Prime Minister Catherine Jacobsadtir, the three parties won a total of 37 seats in Saturday’s vote. The coalition has won two more seats than in previous elections and is likely to remain in power.
Silja Bara Omarsdater, a professor of politics, said the gender quotas imposed by the Left parties over the past decade had succeeded in setting a new standard in Iceland’s political landscape. “It is no longer acceptable to ignore gender equality when selecting candidates,” he said.
The polls suggest a victory for the Left, with 10 parties vying for seats. However, the center-right Independence Party won the most votes and won 16 seats. Out of these 16 seats, women won seven. The Central Progressive Party took the largest lead and won 13 seats. The Progressive Party won five more seats than last time.
Prior to the election, both parties formed a coalition government with Jacobsdattir’s left-wing Green Party. Jacobsdattir’s party lost several seats, but retained eight seats, rejecting pre-election estimates.
The three ruling parties have not announced whether they will work together for another term, but it looks like they will come together in the face of strong voter support. It may take a few more days for the new government to be formed and announced.
