Satpaul Singh Johal, PDSB Trustee for Brampton’s wards 9 and 10 visited earlier today Fernforest Public School in ward 9 for a meeting with Principal Gurmeet Gill, vice principal Shilpa Kotian, and superintendent Neerja Punjabi.
– Over 730 students are enrolled in this school and principal Ms. Gill said that around 90 percent of children belong to the south Asian (mainly Punjabi) community. This school had over 890 students before the COVID pandemic struck in 2020.
– Fernforest Public School has 31 classrooms, and it has no portables in use.
– The school has 67 teachers and staff members. Principal Ms. Gill confirmed that they are not struggling with any significant staff shortage. They have access to a pool of supply teachers, Education Assistants, Lunch Supervisors, and Travel Assistants if the need arises.
– During a detailed conversation with principal Gurmeet Gill, vice principal Shilpa Kotian and superintendent Neerja Punjabi, the need for uniforms in the school was discussed. Principal Gill very clearly said that there is no support and request from the community to implement uniforms for the students.
– Principal Gill said that they are working on launching a program to provide food (to eliminate hunger) for the students in need. Donors from the community will be supporting this program to help underprivileged children.
– Principal Gill also said that no student was suspended in the last five years.
– Superintendent Ms. Punjabi confirmed that the N** word is unacceptable and that if any student uses any kind of discriminatory slurs, they must be suspended as the rules are very clear.
– As some parents have raised their concerns with me, I specifically asked Ms. Punjabi, if south Asian (Punjabi) students are treated harshly (differently) for a violation of rules than students from other communities. She respectfully said that they never tolerate any slur from the students of any community. She also added that the principal can not suspend any student without discussing the details of the matter with the superintendent. (Satpaul Singh Johal, PDSB Trustee for Brampton’s wards 9 and 10)
