– PDSB Trustee Satpaul Singh Johal visited Castlebrooke Secondary School (in Brampton’s ward 10) yesterday and met with Principal Marcia McCurdy-Fagan, and Superintendent Mary Zammit.
– More than 1950 students are studying in this school, and it has 101 full-time teachers. Principal Marcia McCurdy-Fagan told that around 75 percent of these students are of South Asian descent, better to say, from the Punjabi community.
– Around 60 percent of students are male, and females are a minority in the Castlebrooke SS.
– I noticed an unusual environment and activity in the parking lot of the school (girls and boys sitting in the cars at 10.30 a.m., lot full of vehicles, illegal parking, etc.). The principal agreed to regularly monitor the parking lot. They have hired two monitors and looking to hire two more to watch students’ activities in and outside the school.
– We discussed the shooting incident from November 18, 2022. The principal said that the injured student has recovered, and he has returned to school. The shooter (student) has been expelled from the Peel District School Board. Both are Canadian-born Punjabi.
– I asked why a student would shoot another student, and the principal said just out of disrespect, someone pushed someone, and arguments ended with a shooting and injury.
– Principal also said that when police put restrictions on a student (for unlawful actions), the school has no choice but to follow the police department’s instructions. (Such as not allowing the student into the school)
– The principal also said that the situation of fights has calmed down after the shooting incident. Additionally, they said that problem-creating students are not more than 10 percent of the total number of (1950+) students.
– Anti-bullying campaign is being run in the school. The school management also takes advice from the social experts from (the Punjabi) community to better understand behavioral issues with the students and parents.
– Principal also said that fights between brown (Punjabi) and black (Jamaican) students were a trend for some time, but that trend has now changed to fights between the groups of brown (Punjabi) students.
– I was also told that no fights between the girl students were reported in recent times. When asked why male students would fight, the principal said that nothing significant. It is usually over a (girl) friendship, or just over the macho guy status.
– Upgraded security cameras are installed in and outside the school. The principal and 3 vice principals remain vigilant about the gatherings (fights) in the washrooms.
– Principal confirmed that the parents provide cash, credit/debit cards, phones, expensive vehicles, and other luxurious items to the students.
– To better control the rush of lunchtime, the principal has plans to introduce a two-lunch policy. All students will not go for lunch at the same time. Half of the students will be given lunchtime off from 11.26 am, and the second group will go at 12.41 pm.
– Currently, the school management of Castlebrooke SS is considering suspensions (20 days/each) for 9 students. Some students were recently caught carrying 3 replica guns in the school. No real or fake guns/knives/weapons are allowed in the schools.
– Principal clearly said that parents get upset when their child is suspended, and they just (habitually) choose to take sides with their suspended children.
– Principal also said that the parents and students must understand that suspension is a consequence of the behavior.
– Principal and the superintendent of education also said that 20 years old the SRO program may not help maintain peace in school as social media has become a major influencer in the lives of teenagers, and society. They also told me that SRO was more like surveillance of the selective students and a big number of students were not comfortable with the police presence around them.
– The principal also said that students from immigrant families are usually very strongly influenced by the political scenarios and cultural mindsets from back home (in India).
– Principal told that until now, no parent held any discussion about a uniform for the students. They also expressed that uniforms alone will not solve the issues as so many problems do not start during school time. Unsupervised use of cell phones and social media chats from home need to be checked regularly.
– Superintendent Mary Zammit suggested that to stop social media access for the kids, parents can turn off the internet at 10 p.m. every night. No Wi-Fi access during the night means that children will sleep early, and they will be able to wake up early for school!
– Finally, the principal was concerned that very few parents of the Castlebrooke SS students show their interest in Parents Council meetings. The next meeting is scheduled for February 17.
