Train-car collision in Toronto: 2 Punjabi girls killed, 3 boys injured

TORONTO (Satpal Singh Johal) – Two girls (ages 19 and 25) were killed in a head-on collision between a train and a car at Tottenham (a deserted area between Brampton and Barry) north of Toronto at around 11pm on Thursday. Three others injured (each aged around 20) including driver. According to information received, one girl died on the spot and another died at the hospital. Police have not yet released any names, but information is that all the riders were Punjabis, including girls who had recently arrived in Canada to study. It was learned that the lights of the railway crossing were flashing at the time of the incident which took place at night but there was no barricade to keep the vehicles away from the railway line. Railway crossings without gates are common in western countries, including Canada, where drivers are alerted to stop by flashlights and the sound of drums to allow trains to pass. Accidents often (rarely) occur with vehicles that have been stopped over a line. Above case is being investigated by the police and no case has been registered yet.
ਟੋਰਾਂਟੋ (ਸਤਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੌਹਲ)-ਟੋਰਾਂਟੋ ਦੇ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਪਾਸੇ ਟੋਟਨਹੈਮ (ਬਰੈਂਪਟਨ ਤੇ ਬੈਰੀ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਸੁਨਮਸਾਨ ਇਲਾਕਾ) ਵਿਖੇ ਵੀਰਵਾਰ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ 11 ਕੁ ਵਜੇ ਰੇਲ ਗੱਡੀ ਤੇ ਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਟੱਕਰ ਹੋਈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਰ ਸਵਾਰ ਦੋ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ (ਉਮਰ 19 ਤੇ 25 ਸਾਲ) ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਕ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਸਮੇਤ 3 ਕਾਰ ਸਵਾਰ (ਹਰੇਕ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ 20 ਕੁ ਸਾਲ) ਜਖਮੀ ਹਨ। ਮਿਲੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਕ ਕੁੜੀ ਦੀ ਮੌਕੇ `ਤੇ ਜਾਨ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਦੂਸਰੀ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਈ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਅਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸੇ ਪਰ ਮਿਲ ਰਹੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕਾਰ ਸਵਾਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਜੇ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਪੁੱਜੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਸਨ। ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਰਾਤ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਾਪਰੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਮੌਕੇ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਲਾਂਘੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੱਤੀਆਂ ਫਲੈਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਪਰ ਓਥੇ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਲਾਈਨ ਤੋਂ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਰੋਕ (ਬੈਰੀਕੇਡ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਸਮੇਤ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਫਾਟਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਲਾਂਘੇ ਆਮ ਹਨ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਫਲੈਸ਼ ਲਾਈਟਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਟੱਲੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਵਾਜਾ ਨਾਲ ਡਰਾਈਵਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਤਾਂਕਿ ਰੇਲ ਗੱਡੀ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੇ। ਦੁਰਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਅਕਸਰ (ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ) ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਪਰਦੀਆਂ ਜੋ ਰੇਲ ਗੱਡੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਂ ਲਾਈਨ ਦੇ ਉਪਰ ਲਿਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੋਕੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹੋਣ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਪਰਚਾ ਦਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
