| HAMILTON — As Peel and Toronto begin to close workplaces with active COVID-19 outbreaks of five or more cases, Official Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is calling on the Ford government to immediately compensate workers for lost pay, and help businesses survive the shutdowns with direct financial support. Horwath released the following statement:
“Peel Public Health and Toronto Public Health are doing the right thing by temporarily clearing out workplaces with active COVID-19 outbreaks. But Mr. Ford can’t expect workers to survive without pay while their workplace remains shut down, or for businesses to absorb another financial shock in a year when so many have struggled to stay afloat. The government must compensate workers for lost pay, and help businesses survive these shutdowns by giving them direct financial support. We should be doing this province wide: pausing workplaces that are not truly essential, and compensating workers and businesses. Doug Ford walked us right into this third wave, and he needs to take responsibility for the damage it’s doing to people’s livelihoods.” |
