Some of the protest organisers express sympathy for the city’s citizens, but argue there is no other way to repeal all COVID-19 public health laws across the country.
Since Friday, automobiles have been stopped and honking on roads leading to Parliament Hill, and threats and harassment have been reported in the area. Because the risk of violence is too great, Ottawa police have decided not to intervene when they see laws being broken.
Two arrests were made Tuesday, and a third was made on Wednesday, involving a 48-year-old Quebec man accused with “threats and statements expressed on social media.”
According to authorities, crowds increased to between 5,000 and 18,000 people on Saturday, with the city estimated that another 3,000 people came to the Hill on Sunday. Police estimated 250 individuals remained Tuesday night, but did not provide a vehicle count.
Since Saturday, the scope of the road closures and the size of the region the city claims to avoid has shrunk, but sections of both residential and business districts remain closed. Many companies and services have decided to shut down.
