Members of the Ottawa blockade, which has put the capital at a standstill for nearly three weeks, are accusing the federal government of employing a fear tactic by citing the Emergencies Act.
Trucks, RVs, and other vehicles bearing Canadian flags or banners with the word “freedom” in large letters across their front grilles remain parked on Wellington Street in front of Parliament Hill, with drivers stating that they will remain there until all COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions are lifted.
For the first time in Canadian history, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the act on Monday, with specifics of the restrictions released in cabinet orders on Tuesday night.
Delivering children to anti-government blockades, directly participating in protests, or bringing aid such as food or gasoline to those involved might result in a $5,000 fine or five years in prison under the act.
Blockades are prohibited on Parliament Hill and its environs, as well as official residences, war monuments, airports, harbours, border crossings, piers, lighthouses, canals, interprovincial and international bridges, hospitals and COVID-19 vaccine clinics, trade corridors, and infrastructure required for the supply of utilities, such as power generation and transmission.
The cabinet orders are already in effect, but they must be confirmed by resolutions that will be put to a vote in both the House of Commons and the Senate.
The government has until next week to table the motion activating the act, but only until Thursday to do so for the motions enacting the specific powers, which will be in effect for 30 days unless the government revokes them sooner.
