The federal government of Canada has pledged $10 million to assist 200 Black families in the Greater Toronto Area in purchasing their first house.
The cash will be awarded to the BlackNorth Homeownership Bridge Program in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity Toronto, said Ahmed Hussen, the minister of housing, diversity, and inclusion, during a news conference Friday morning.
“There are systemic impediments in every aspect of our society that Black Canadians confront, including having a safe and affordable place to call home,” Hussen told reporters on Friday.
Under the Shared Equity Mortgage Provider fund, 200 Black families will be able to buy their first house in the GTA over the next four years. It will assist homebuyers in lowering their monthly mortgage payment without raising their down payment.
The scheme, according to Hussen, is intended to keep these homes affordable for numerous owners and generations while also “creating strength and generational wealth through their home.
The BlackNorth Initiative’s executive director, Dahabo Ahmed-Omer, said the extra money is critical in supporting Black families in the GTA. Many people are unaware of how thoroughly racialized the journey to homeownership is, according to her.
According to Ahmed-Omer, 73 percent of homeowners in higher income groups who own their homes are white, whereas 69 percent of people in lower income brackets who rent their homes are racialized minorities.
According to recent federal government surveys, Black Canadians have one of the lowest percentages of property ownership in the country.
“The BlackNorth Homeownership Bridge Program is more than just a low-cost housing programme. “It’s a plan for economic and racial inclusiveness,” she explained. “This programme is intended to serve as a practical tool for mobilising people from all walks of life to continue working together to combat systematic racism in Canada.”
“We believe that by enabling working Black families in the Greater Toronto Area, this initiative will raise future generations.” Families with household incomes as low as $65,000 can participate in this programme and generate home equity that will benefit future generations.”
The BlackNorth Homeownership Bridge Program, according to her, aims to alleviate imbalances across the country, but the initial focus is on developing a pilot in the GTA that can be scaled nationally.
