Brampton In light of improving public health indicators, Mayor Patrick Brown believes the Ontario government should “strongly” consider following Quebec’s lead and lifting the mask mandate for elementary and secondary school students.
On Tuesday, Quebec announced that, as of March 7, school-aged children will no longer be obliged to wear masks in classrooms, however they will be necessary in common areas and on school buses.
The announcement comes after Alberta officials said earlier this month that the mask mandate for schools would be lifted. In all other situations, Alberta has exempted minors under the age of 13 from the mask requirement.
As part of a series of steps aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19, all students in Ontario from Grade 1 to Grade 12 are obliged to wear masks at school.
Although the provincial legislation does not apply to pupils in Kindergarten, most boards in the GTA have made their own decisions to require masks for students in those grades.
Brown told reporters at Brampton City Hall that he feels Quebec’s approach to gradually remove the school mask mandate is “relevant” to Ontario and should be explored as part of a larger effort to lift most remaining public health requirements.

ਕਿਊਬਿਕ ਨੇ ਮੰਗਲਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਘੋਸ਼ਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਹੁਣ ਸਕੂਲੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ 7 ਮਾਰਚ ਤੋਂ ਕਲਾਸਰੂਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਸਕ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਮ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਬੱਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋੜ ਜਾਰੀ ਰਹੇਗੀ।
ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਓਨਟਾਰੀਓ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰੇਡ 1 ਤੋਂ ਗ੍ਰੇਡ 12 ਤੱਕ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਵਿਡ-19 ਦੇ ਫੈਲਣ ਨੂੰ ਘਟਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਉਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਸਕ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ।
ਸੂਬਾਈ ਨੀਤੀ ਕਿੰਡਰਗਾਰਟਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ GTA ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਬੋਰਡਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗ੍ਰੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਮਾਸਕ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਰੈਂਪਟਨ ਸਿਟੀ ਹਾਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਬ੍ਰਾਊਨ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਸਕ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ ਚੁੱਕਣ ਦੀ ਕਿਊਬਿਕ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਓਨਟਾਰੀਓ ਲਈ “ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗਿਕ” ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਤਕ ਸਿਹਤ ਦੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਬਚੇ ਉਪਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਕਣ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਯਤਨ ਦੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
