Six Brampton councillors Pat Fortini, Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Charmaine Williams, Jeff Bowman, Martin Medeiros and Doug Whillans issued a press release about their efforts to restore transparency at city hall.
They stated, “On February 10th we issued a media release drawing the line in the sand between what we believed to be a potentially rogue bureaucracy and our commitment to a transparent and accountable municipal government.
We pledged to fight for our democracy and put the needs of taxpayers first and foremost. To this end, we took decisive action towards lifting what we believed to be a cloud of potential financial and administrative mismanagement.
Our collective efforts lead to the appointment of an interim CAO, Paul Morrison, who shares our commitment to restoring public confidence, by doing business in a fair, transparent and accountable fashion. Most importantly, our new interim CAO respects the role of Council in setting policy and priorities for our City, while making the necessary changes to move the City forward.
At our Council meeting of March 2nd, 2022 we sent several strong messages about our commitment to protect you – our residents and taxpayers, and we were pleased that some of our Council colleagues showed support for our efforts. Our support of a successful motion put forward by Councillors Jeff Bowman & Martin Medeiros directs our Interim CAO to identify departments requiring an immediate external review process; and to work in consultation with our Interim Director of Audit.
Additionally, after publicly exposing some alarming information about consultant costs previously kept hidden from Council related to our efforts of attracting a university presence in our City, we directed our Interim CAO to undertake to have a forensic accounting performed on all financial and contractual transactions on the university file.
These are important steps, but they will not be our final steps. We will continue to remind our Council colleagues of the need to honour the trust placed in them by taxpayers who deserve to know their tax dollars are being wisely and responsibly invested in sound, defendable city
building initiatives, and financial stewardship.”
