In the face of record-high gasoline and fuel prices, the Ford government will introduce legislation that will temporarily decrease gasoline and fuel taxes.
According to a senior government source, the law, which is set to be introduced on Monday, will lower the gas tax by 5.7 cents per litre and the fuel tax by 5.3 cents per litre for six months starting July 1.
Premier Doug Ford promised in 2018 to eliminate tax cuts and the cap-and-trade system, lowering petrol costs by ten cents per litre. Ford repealed cap-and-trade after being elected, stating that his government had decreased gas tax rates by 4.3 cents per litre.
However, the federal government responded by imposing a carbon tax on the state.
The province’s rising gas prices have caused some to call on Ford to keep his election promise of further lowering the gas tax and providing relief to motorists.
