All NATO nations, including Canada, are expected to increase their military budgets, according to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
According to Stoltenberg, NATO leaders reaffirmed their commitment to this goal during a meeting in Spain today. All NATO countries agreed in 2014 to increase their defence spending to 2% of their national gross domestic product within a ten-year period.
While Stoltenberg claims that the vast majority of NATO nations currently have plans to achieve that goal, the Liberal administration has refused to make a public commitment to the goal, let alone provide a timeline for achieving it.
In fact, according to a report released by Stoltenberg on Monday, Canadian defence spending will drop this year to 1.27 percent of GDP. In contrast, such percentages were 1.32 percent in 2018 and 1.42 percent in 2020.
In response to a question regarding Canadian defence spending, Stoltenberg told reporters that while he appreciates the desire to use tax dollars for public services like healthcare and education, NATO members must also make investments in their defence as the world becomes more dangerous.
The two percent aim, according to the NATO secretary-general, is a floor, not a ceiling, despite the fact that Canada was recognised for commanding a NATO battlegroup in Latvia.
