ਸਟੈਟਿਸਟਿਕਸ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਨੇ ਮੰਗਲਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ‘ਚ 2020 ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੰਸਕ ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਅਪਰਾਧਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਸੱਤਵੇਂ ਸਾਲ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਤੀਜੇ ਸਾਲ ਕਤਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ 2020 ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਦੂਕ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਕੇ 39% ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ, ਇਹ ਗਿਣਤੀ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧ ਕੇ 41% ਹੋ ਗਈ।
ਬਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਗੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ 297 ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਕਤਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 57% ਇੱਕ ਹੈਂਡਗਨ ਨਾਲ ,26% ਇੱਕ ਰਾਈਫਲ ਜਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਟਗਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ 17% ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਲਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਪੁਲਸ ਨੇ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ 788 ਕਤਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ 29 ਵੱਧ ਹੈ। ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਦੀ ਦਰ 3% ਵਧੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ 2020 ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ 100,000 ਆਬਾਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ 2.00 ਕਤਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ 2.06 ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਪੀੜਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਇੱਕ ਤਿਹਾਈ, 247 ਨਸਲੀ ਘੱਟ-ਗਿਣਤੀਆਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਪਛਾਣੇ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਲਗਭਗ ਪੰਜਵਾਂ, 19% ਦੱਖਣੀ ਏਸ਼ੀਆਈ ਸਨ।
Statistics Canada noted that “violent firearm-related offences increased for the seventh consecutive year, rising by 4 per cent in 2021” compared to 2020.While 39% of homicides were committed using a gun in 2020, that number inched up in 2021 to 41%. “Of the 297 firearm-related homicides, 57% were committed with a handgun and 26% were committed with a rifle or shotgun (the firearm type was unknown or another type of firearm was used for 17% of homicides),” it stated.
Police reported 788 homicides in 2021, 29 more than the year before. The homicide rate increased 3%, from 2.00 homicides per 100,000 population in 2020 to 2.06 in 2021. Nearly a third of the victims, 247, were identified as racial minorities, and nearly a fifth, 19%, were South Asians.
