Ontario’s legislation to prevent border blockades still too broad: Advocates

According to civil rights advocates, Progressive Conservative legislation that would bar protestors from illegally obstructing Ontario’s border crossings is still too broad and might have a “substantial impact on expressive activities and peaceful assembly.”
The “Keeping Ontario Open for Business Act” was introduced on Monday and, if enacted, would give law enforcement the authority to suspend drivers’ licences and vehicles on the spot, take licence plates, and tow vehicles used in a border blockage.
Solicitor General Sylvia Jones stated while announcing the bill that it would only apply to illegal blockades that impede economic activity and international trade, and that it would not affect the right to peaceful and brief protests at border crossings.
