Some visitors can now apply for a work permit at Canada’s ports of entry

Because of the travel restrictions in effect during the epidemic, most visitors to Canada were unable to apply for a work visa at a Canadian port of entry (POE). They are now able to do so, as long as they meet specific criteria.

Foreign nationals who are permitted to come to Canada are eligible to apply. Individuals who have been properly vaccinated, as well as immediate family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents, are included. Those with a genuine work offer in Canada may also be included.

Any foreign national, including those who have not been vaccinated, may apply for a work visa at a POE. It’s worth noting, though, that people who have been vaccinated are more likely to be excluded from Canada’s travel restrictions.

In most cases, temporary foreign workers must get a work permit before entering Canada. If you have a job offer in Canada, will not be working as a live-in caregiver or a seasonal agricultural worker, and meet one of the following qualifications, you may apply for one at a POE.

If you are not need to obtain a temporary resident visa in order to work in Canada.
If your employment is part of the International Mobility Program, this applies to you (IMP).

Employers can hire foreign nationals without obtaining a Labour Market Impact Assessment under this scheme (LMIA). An LMIA is a document that certifies that no Canadian citizens or permanent residents are qualified to perform the job’s responsibilities.

If you are a citizen of the United States, Greenland, or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

Whether their job is part of the TFWP or the IMP, nationals or permanent residents of certain countries or territories may be eligible to apply for a work permit at a POE.

What documentation should I bring with me to the port of entry?
If your employment is covered by the TFWP and you need an LMIA, you must bring the following documentation with you to the Canadian Border.

Your employment offer;
a copy of your LMIA, as well as your LMIA number
Proof of your ability to perform the job’s responsibilities, such as your qualifications and/or experience.
If you want to work in Quebec, you might require a CAQ.

If your employment is covered by the IMP and you don’t need an LMIA, you should bring the following documentation to the border:
Your employment offer;
Your employer’s offer of employment number;

Proof that an LMIA isn’t required;
Proof of your ability to accomplish the job’s obligations, such as your qualifications and/or experience.

If you do not require an LMIA and wish to operate in Quebec, you will not require a CAQ.

Furthermore, if your work visa expired while you were outside of Canada, you may be able to apply for a new one at a POE if you meet the requirements. You must demonstrate to the immigration officer that you fit the criteria for the category for which you are applying.

Before travelling to the Canadian border, make sure you are eligible to enter the country.
