After January’s huge winter storm, city spent $17 million clearing snow off

According to a staff assessment released this month, removing the 55 cm of snow that fell in only 15 hours during a significant winter storm in Toronto this past January cost the city more than $17 million, or nearly 20% of its annual winter maintenance budget.
The rapid snow accumulation during the Jan. 16-17 storm, combined with prolonged frigid conditions in the weeks that followed, created a “unique set of challenges for storm cleanup,” according to the city’s 2022 major snow event post operational report, authored by the city’s general manager of transportation services.
At a cost of more than $17 million, 180,000 tonnes of snow were cleared off streets, walkways, and cycling lanes, according to the report.
