As the extreme cold hits again, Toronto consider opening more warming centres for homeless

When significant weather is expected in Toronto again this weekend, city authorities say they may consider opening more warming centres than usual for unhoused persons.
At a city hall news briefing on Wednesday, Toronto Mayor John Tory said, “We’re looking at ways to have some extra room.”
“This is something we think about every day. We will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of the individuals in concern.”
During very cold winter weather, the city operates four warming centres that provide a warm inside area to relax, snacks, washrooms, and referrals to emergency shelter.
Homeless advocates, shelter providers, health-care experts, legal workers, church leaders, and researchers are advocating for four more warming centres as part of the Shelter and Housing Justice Network.
The city’s medical officer of health issues an extreme cold weather alert when temperatures reach -15 C or below, or when the wind chill is anticipated to be -20 C or lower, and local services, including warming centres, are activated.
