According to a statement from Macron’s office, French President Emmanuel Macron urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to cease Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and to secure the protection and security of Ukraine’s nuclear sites.
Macron and Putin had a nearly two-hour phone conversation on Sunday, according to a French official.
The recent talks between Putin and Macron were first reported by Russian media. Macron has maintained constant communication with Putin, but has failed to persuade Moscow to end an 11-day campaign, as has been the case with other foreign attempts.
On Sunday, Putin stated that his operation in Ukraine was progressing according to plan and that it would continue until Kyiv was defeated.
As efforts to evacuate the heavily shelled city of Mariupol failed for the second day in a row, Putin said his operation in Ukraine was progressing according to plan and would not end until Kyiv ceased fighting.
