In a huge operation at a port in Gujarat state, Indian anti-smuggling intelligence authorities recovered roughly three tonnes of heroin, estimated to be worth $2.7 billion (£1.9 billion).
Officials told that forensic testing is still underway to ascertain the exact value of the seized medicines.
According to a statement, two persons have been arrested and several others are being probed.
The consignment came from Afghanistan and was labelled as talc stones.
It was shipped from Iran to Gujarat’s Mundra port.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) claimed it had received information that a consignment from Bandar Abbas had been intercepted.

The data also revealed that the shipment was being imported by a company in Vijaywada, in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
“Suspected narcotic substances were recovered from the containers when our personnel detained and examined the consignment, and the presence of heroin was confirmed,” DRI stated in a statement.
Searches were carried out in a number of cities across India, including the national capital, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Chennai, according to officials.
“Preliminary investigations have indicated the involvement of Afghan nationals, who are currently under investigation,” the agency stated.

ਇਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟੋਰੇਟ ਆਫ ਰੈਵੇਨਿ ਇੰਟੈਲੀਜੈਂਸ (ਡੀਆਰਆਈ) ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਫੀਆ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਈਰਾਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਅੱਬਾਸ ਬੰਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਸੀ।
ਖੁਫੀਆ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਜੇਵਾੜਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਾਲ ਦੀ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।
ਡੀਆਰਆਈ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਜਦੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਖੇਪ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਕੰਟੇਨਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਬਰਾਮਦ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਹੈਰੋਇਨ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਹੋਈ।”
ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਦਿੱਲੀ, ਅਹਿਮਦਾਬਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਚੇਨਈ ਸਮੇਤ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਲਾਸ਼ੀ ਲਈ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
ਏਜੰਸੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਜਾਂਚ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਫਗਾਨ ਨਾਗਰਿਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।”
