In Canada, Amarjit Sohi, of Punjabi descent, was elected mayor of Edmonton
Toronto (Baljinder Sekha) Amarjit Sohi, a former city councilor who also worked as a bus driver in the city of Edmonton, has been elected the new mayor of Edmonton.
Sohi, 57, who came from India as an immigrant, will now be the city’s first mayor of Punjabi descent. Sohi came to Edmonton in 1982 at the age of 18 after being sponsored by his elder brother. He is a native of Banbhora village in Sangrur district.
He previously served as Edmonton City Councilor from 2007 to 2015, winning three elections before resigning from his seat after being elected Liberal Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods. Sohi served in that capacity from 2015 to the 2019 election and ran key departments in the federal government of Canada, including infrastructure and natural resources.
Sohi is a success story of immigrants in Canada as she worked as a taxi driver and then as a bus driver for the Edmonton Transit Service before deciding to enter politics. He was married to Sarabjit Kaur Sidhu of Sekha Kalan village in Moga district. He has a daughter, Seerat Sohi. There is a wave of happiness in Canada when he becomes the mayor.
