Toronto issues an extreme cold weather warning

On Monday, the City of Toronto issued an extreme cold weather advisory, indicating that freezing temperatures are expected within the next 24 hours or longer.
The city issued the advisory in a news release to ensure that Toronto residents take the required precautions to keep safe from the cold.
Extreme cold weather alerts are usually issued when temperatures are expected to drop to -15 degrees Celsius or lower, or when the wind chill is expected to drop to -20 degrees Celsius or lower.
The alert will be in effect until further notice, according to the city, and more space will be made available at warming centres during that time.
Warming centres in Toronto will open at 7 p.m. on Monday and will remain open until noon the next day when the alert is lifted.
The following warming centres are being activated by the city:
129 Peter St.
5800 Yonge St.
Exhibition Place, Better Living Centre, 195 Princes’ Blvd.
Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr.
Residents are asked to call 311 if they observe someone who is homeless and in need of assistance, and the city will send out an outreach team to investigate.
Call 911 if the person is in difficulty or requires emergency assistance, according to the city.
