ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ Bandi Chhor Diwas ਇੱਕ ਮਹਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਕ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਮਹਾਨ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ 52 ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਡਵਾ ਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨੀਅਤ ਦਾ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਜਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਗਵਾਲਿਯਰ ਕਿਲੇ ‘ਚ ਕੈਦ ਸਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਕਬਰ ਦੇ ਉਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਜਹਾਂਗੀਰ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ‘ਤੇ ਕੈਦ ਹੋਏ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪੀੜਾ ਦੇਖੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕੈਦਖਾਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣਗੇ ਜਦ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਵੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਜਹਾਂਗੀਰ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਰੱਖੀ ਕਿ ਜਿੰਨੇ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਚੋਲੇ ਦੀ ਡੋਰ ਫੜੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਆ ਸਕਣਗੇ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਵਾਇਆ ਕਿ 52 ਡੋਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹਰ ਰਾਜਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੇ — ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋਏ।
ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਕਾਇਮ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ “ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਦਿਵਸ” ਵਜੋਂ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਇਸ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਰਿਸਰ ਚਾਨਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਗਮਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਸ਼ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਜਸ਼ਨ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੇ ਅਸਲ ਮੂਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ — ਕਿ ਅਸਲ ਜਿੱਤ ਉਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦਿਵਾਈਏ।

Bandi Chhor Diwas holds a special place in Sikh history as a symbol of freedom, compassion, and justice. Why Is Bandi Chhor Diwas Celebrated?
According to Sikh tradition, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was imprisoned by Emperor Jahangir at Gwalior Fort. During his imprisonment, he saw 52 Hindu kings also held captive. The Guru refused to leave until all of them were freed. Jahangir, trying to test his resolve, declared that only those kings holding onto the Guru’s robe could walk out with him. In an extraordinary act of wisdom, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji had a special robe stitched with 52 tassels — allowing each ruler to hold one and walk to freedom.
This historic event became known as Bandi Chhor Diwas, meaning “The Day of Liberation.” It reminds the Sikh community and the world that true victory lies in freeing others, not just oneself.
Every year, this day coincides with Diwali celebrations, and the Golden Temple in Amritsar glows brilliantly with thousands of lights. Devotees from across the world gather to offer prayers, light lamps, and celebrate the spirit of freedom and faith.
