It happened shortly after 6 a.m. in the busy highway’s Fort Erie-bound lanes past Fruitland Road.
When there was an apparent traffic congestion, a car slammed into the back of a tractor trailer, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
The passenger vehicle eventually came to a halt on its roof. Schmidt said the driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the site.
There were no additional injuries reported.
The highways leading to Fort Erie are expected to be closed for the rest of the morning as police investigate.
