During a U.N. Security Council meeting on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine on Monday, Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia proposed that fleeing Ukrainians not have to flee to Russia or its ally Belarus, a key issue Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called “just cynicism” and a propaganda effort in the country’s favour.
“There are no requests in this plan that citizens be transported to Russia or onto Russian territory,” Nebenzia stated. “Evacuation is also being offered to Ukrainian cities west of Kyiv, and it will ultimately be up to the people to decide where they want to be evacuated to.”
However, suspicions abounded, inspired by prior attempts to guide civilians to safety in the midst of Europe’s largest combat war since World War II. The office of Zelenskyy declined to comment on the latest Russian proposal, saying simply that Moscow’s preparations can be trusted if a safe evacuation begins.
