The principal of Lougheed Middle School in Brampton’s ward 9, shared a letter with parents on last Friday, April 21. (Kindly note that the superintendent of education says that their ongoing investigation is leading to a positive outcome). Over 630 students are enrolled in this school, out of that about 92 percent are of South Asian descent. Following is the (sad) matter principal Donna Bhamra sent to the parents:
Dear Lougheed Middle School Parents and Guardians,
It is with sadness and disappointment that I am writing to you today regarding some serious matters that have been brought to my attention. It has come to my notice that some of our students have been showing disrespect towards school property, teachers, and lunchroom supervisors. This is a very concerning issue as it not only affects the school’s reputation but also the learning environment of our students.
Our school takes pride in maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all students. We have invested a lot of resources in providing quality education and facilities to our students. However, it is disheartening to see that some of our students are not taking this responsibility seriously.
We have received complaints of students vandalizing school property, littering the classrooms and hallways, and being disrespectful toward their teachers and lunchroom supervisors during the school day. This behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We understand that children may make mistakes, but we want to ensure that such mistakes are taken seriously as learning opportunities and not repeated.
As a school staff, we remain in solidarity and will be placing a PAUSE on ALL extra-curricular activities, field trips, tournaments, and monthly heritage month assemblies until further notice. The library will also be closed to all students during Lunch. Students who participate in the Counting on You and OFIP Tutoring Program are welcome to continue attending their before and after school sessions.
Our community engagement sessions will resume as planned. The upcoming events include Grandparents’ Chat and Chai on April 27th (10 AM), Black Parent Engagement Session on April 27th (6:30 PM) and Math Night on May 4th at (6:30 PM).
As parents and guardians, we request you have a conversation with your child and remind them of the importance of respecting school property, educators, and community staff. It is crucial that we work together to help our children understand the significance of being responsible and respectful toward the school community.
We appreciate your cooperation in this matter and hope to see positive changes in our school community soon. With time and care, I know that extracurricular activities will resume soon. I appreciate your diligence in this matter.
Thank you for your time and attention. Donna Bhamra, Principal – Acting
