The Toronto Zoo reported Tuesday that its aviaries have been closed to safeguard its birds from a “very dangerous strain of avian flu” recently found in Southern Ontario and the Atlantic provinces.
In a statement, the zoo said, “Your Toronto Zoo is devoted to the health and safety of the animals in our care.”
“We’re taking preemptive measures to protect our birds from Avian Influenza, which has been confirmed in a wild bird in southern Ontario,” says the statement. We preserve the aviaries against contamination from outside the Zoo by restricting access to them to only Zoo employees.”
The highly dangerous H5N1 type of avian flu was found at a poultry farm in southern Ontario on Monday, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The farm is under severe quarantine, according to the CFIA, which is enforcing movement limitations and proposing increased biosecurity at surrounding farms.
In recent months, outbreaks have occurred on both commercial and non-commercial farms in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
A wild red-tailed hawk in the Waterloo, Ont., area was diagnosed with avian flu last week, according to the agency.
